Background

Medical professionals need to be able to identify the right test for their patient, as well as understand and correctly use test results.

Melbourne Genomics’ Clinical Flagships (see separate project summaries) enabled participating medical professionals to develop skills and practical knowledge in genomic medicine. Flagships also built a cohort of ‘genomic experts’ able to support the adoption of genomics in their speciality area.

The broader workforce of medical professionals, however, need continuing education to support them to use genomics in patient care.

Project description

The objective: to raise medical professionals’ awareness of key concepts in the clinical application of genomics, specifically among clinicians who did not participate in Clinical Flagships.

Clinical Flagship leaders and/or key clinicians collaborated with the Melbourne Genomics education team to co-develop and deliver two-hour clinical workshops for their peers, usually colleagues within the Melbourne Genomics member hospitals.

These ‘Genomics in the clinic’ workshops aimed to provide basic knowledge of key pre- and post-test genomic testing concepts.

Activities, outcomes and lessons learnt

Findings from this project will be made available following publication of results.
